Election Update December 28, 2007
(From The Daily Freeman)
Challenges to the Rhinebeck election results have been dropped, giving Daniel Staley a seat on the Town Board and putting control of the board back in the hands of the Republican Party.
Democrat Monique Segarra dropped her challenge in her race against Staley on Thursday in state Supreme Court in Poughkeepsie, according to the Dutchess County Board of Elections.
Court cases had been filed by both sides in a race that had Staley leading Segarra, 1,231-1,223.
The race had 51 paper ballot votes for Staley and 46 for Segarra, with 15 of those ballots in dispute and not included in the tally.
With his win, Staley will become one of three Republicans to sit with two Democrats on the board in 2008. The board had a 4-1 Democratic majority going into the election.
Kirsten Gillibrand Chosen to Fill Clinton's Senate Seat

Rhinebeck woman among those charged with running a prostitution ring tied to Eliot Spitzer
Tanya Hollander, the woman charged with arranging prostitutes for the Emperor's Club VIP, appears to have been leading a secret double life as both a hippie-ish holistic healer and a power broker's madam.
Tanya, as the media has been spelling her name, is alleged to have booked girls for New York Governor-for-the-moment Eliot Spitzer. Meanwhile, Tania, an alias listed in charges unsealed by the U.S. Attorney's office on March 6, appears to have maintained an extensive "health counseling" website (now taken down but cached below) and a MySpace page (last login February 8), where she describes herself as "a grounded, creative, adventurous, and wise spirit," a practitioner of holistic healing in the Manhattan and Hudson Valley area who is "known to get lost in health food stores and wander for several hours."
Tanya Hollander is a health counselor and ran a web site to promote her services. The site has since gone down. Here is our cached copy of her front page:

Campaign flyers full of outrageously false claims
SPECIAL ELECTION UPDATE 11/5/07:
Halloween may be over but dirty tricks continue. Campaign flyers full of outrageously false claims with the tagline “Vote Team Traudt” have infuriated Rhinebeck residents who expect a higher standard from our local politicians. One of the more egregious fabrications is that Mr. Block is intent on combining the Town and Village. Aside from the fact that this would be legally impossible to implement as Town Supervisor is not a dictatorial position, it contradicts every public statement Mr.Block has ever made, including his interview with rhinecliff.org that you can view HERE.

Letter to Poughkeepsie Journal responds to Joe Ely's attacks
The following letter appeared in the Poughkeepsie Journal November 4, 2007:
A recent letter from Joe Ely ("Block tries to spin his way out of poor choices," Oct. 15) regarding PANDATV23 insults the station and the municipal leaders who removed him from authority. Here are the real facts.
Ely was replaced as Rhinebeck town representative to the PANDA (Public Access Northern Dutchess Area) board in January because PANDA was suffering under his direction. PANDA's audio and video quality had deteriorated and little was done to train community producers.
Despite the loss of his board seat, Ely continued to lead PANDA as volunteer station manager. In April, he was finally removed, but it wasn't until the July 12 PANDA board meeting that those who remained loyal to Ely were finally replaced by newly elected officers.
By Aug. 2, the new officers discovered records at M&T bank showing more than $25,000 in unauthorized checks written and cashed and the PANDA treasury virtually emptied. Under Ely, the normal checks and balances were not observed. While no one is asserting Ely took part in any criminal wrongdoing, the authorities were contacted and another person has been arrested on grand larceny charges and the matter is before a grand jury.
Subsequently, each of the five PANDA communities authorized supplemental funding to keep PANDA operating, secure that the new PANDA leaders are accomplished professionals in film and commercial television with the highest personal integrity.
We could not allow self-serving inaccuracies to go without response.
